Recently, the story of the mutual dedication between American friend Sakolsky and Yin Yuzhen has drawn widespread attention. Over two decades ago, Sakolsky donated $5,000 through a foundation to Yin Yuzhen for tree planting. What was once a barren desert is now lush with forests, creating a remarkable cross-border tale of desertification control.

Beyond Sakolsky, the Mu Us Sandy Land has also welcomed many more "global villagers."

Among them, the American youth Yin Yifan (Donald Ashton Jones) was one of the most dedicated. In 2014, while watching a documentary about Yin Yuzhen's desertification control efforts in a pizza shop in Harbin, he was deeply moved. In 2015, he backpacked to the Mu Us Desert. When they first met, the two could not communicate through language and had to rely on gestures and smiles. However, he proved exceptionally hardworking in learning to plant trees, capable of planting more than 50 saplings in a single day. Later, he came to regard Yin Yuzhen as his elder sister and took the Chinese name "Yin Yifan." For ten years, he has returned every spring to plant trees, and has planted over 2,000 trees in the Mu Us Desert.

There was also the South Korean family of Cho Sam-gyu. In 2005, after watching a documentary about Yin Yuzhen's fight against desertification, the child voluntarily offered to donate his New Year's money to support the sand control efforts. In June 2006, the entire family traveled to Inner Mongolia, where the children personally planted four Mongolian Scotch pines. Twenty years on, those young saplings have grown into sturdy, towering trees in the forest.

According to Yin Yuzhen, international friends from countries including France, Germany, Russia, Japan and Switzerland have come to the Mu Us Desert — some planting trees on site in person, while others asking her to plant on their behalf. In 2017, she took the stage at the United Nations conference on combating desertification to share China's experience in desertification control.

Why do so many international friends travel all the way to the Mu Us Desert just to plant a tree? Desertification knows no borders. Through nearly four decades of relentless effort, Yin Yuzhen has turned the barren sands into a 70,000-mu oasis — a feat that has shown people from different countries one undeniable truth: our shared responsibility to the planet is universal. What they plant is not merely a tree, but a promise to the home we all inhabit. Kindness transcends mountains and seas; perseverance touches hearts far and wide. Standing behind Yin Yuzhen is the warmth of friends from overseas and the steadfast support of people from across China—researchers, volunteers, farmers, and herders. Countless hands join hers in sending roots deep into the sand, leaving green upon the earth.
